Museumsinsel Berlin »An Exhibition«
The exhibition presents the Museumsinsel Berlin from the visitor’s perspective with different subject areas conveyed in three concentric tiers.
The core of the exhibition focuses on the historical constituents of the Museumsinsel Berlin – a cohesive unit of five museum buildings and their collections. This inner layer of the exhibition gives visitors an overview of the architecture of each of the buildings on the island and the contents of their collections.
The second layer comprises several stations and illustrates the measures that are necessary to preserve the historical substance of the Museumsinsel Berlin while ensuring that it is further developed to meet the requirements expected of modern museums. These measures are summarised in the Masterplan Museumsinsel Berlin. The most important aims of the plan are to fully renovate the historical museum buildings in accordance with modern standards of conservation and to create a visitor-friendly
The third, outermost layer of the exhibition thematises the significance of the Museumsinsel Berlin for the surrounding city. Large-scale exhibits on various topics such as “Financing and Sponsorship” or “Tourism and Traffic Infrastructure” demonstrate the diverse relationships between the island and the adjacent city districts and reveal how the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin interact and cooperate with other stakeholders from art, education, politics and business.
